Whew, new carpet is expensive! You have not even begun your search for the prefect carpet for your home and all of a sudden you realize the carpet is going to be more than you planned. Let’s get real – real fast – cheap carpet is cheap for a reason: The manufacturers have created low priced carpet that will not have the required performance characteristics that a homeowner would normally expect.
Be careful if you begin your search over the phone by asking “how much is new carpet?” This is actually hard to answer because it is like asking, “how much is a new car?” Well, as you know, some cars can be very expensive while others can be less. Are you shopping for a Chevy or a Lexus? Carpet styles can range from rental quality all the way up to luxury products. Yarn types are also different. Cheap yarns stain easier and wear out faster.
You need to be careful at the beginning of your search. Don’t get discouraged if your project seems to be out of reach financially when you check pricing from the first vendor you talk to. And, do you have an initial idea how much do you plan to spend on your next flooring project? Do you have any ideas of the cost of new flooring? Sometimes we’ll ask a client what they have budgeted for their project and they’ll simply state that when they see something they like, they’ll know and will buy it. Unfortunately that approach doesn’t work very well for new carpet. In fact it never works. Why? Because new carpet can be expensive, so much so that folks can easily be “sticker shocked” by pricing.
A whole house might easily be done with new carpet for say, $3,500, or by simply switching manufacturer and style the project can easily double in price to $7,000 or more. And with unscrupulous vendors out there, consumers can be taken advantage of. With mark-ups at 20-80% or more, the variation of pricing from one vendor to the next can be huge. For example, we bid a carpet project recently for $6,000 and it wasn’t until after the installation that we heard another vendor came in with a carpet product recommendation that wasn’t as good as ours and they wanted $10,000 for their project! That’s 40% more expensive from one vendor to another. Pretty extreme, don’t you agree?
