Laminate flooring in wet areas? Understand the performance of your product …

Contrary to what you might have heard in the past, a laminate floor can be a great and stylish choice for bathrooms and wet areas, such as laundry rooms. As with all special installations, however, there are a few things you will want to take into account first.

The first thing to consider is the home and the family’s lifestyle. Not all rooms are used the same and standing water is the primary culprit in laminate floor damage. For example, does the homeowner give the 90 lb dog baths in the tub? Or in some cases, boys (and men) can have (questionable) aim and keeping a clean and dry bathroom can be nearly impossible. In both cases, a laminate floor is probably not the best choice. So always ask yourself if the environment is suitable.

The second thing to consider is the floor’s quality. Laminate can be a great choice if the correct floor is chosen. Not all laminates are created equal. Check with the manufacturer to see if the floor is suitable for installation in wet areas.

Once the floor is chosen, it’s important to read the instructions and adhere to all the guidelines.

Laminate is installed as a “floating floor”, a minimum of ¼” expansion space must be left around the entire perimeter of the room and at all vertical obstructions including all supply and drain lines and at the tub. Some manufactures require gluing the floor together in this type of installation.

Remove the toilet before installing the floor and place a rag in the drain to prevent gas from escaping (see Photo 3). I also prefer to remove pedestal sinks. Be sure to follow all local plumbing codes, which may require hiring a plumber.

Level the floor and use underlayment as with any installation. You may want to consider an underlayment that has antimicrobial properties or prevents bacteria.

When the floor is installed, fill all expansion spaces with 100% mildew resistant silicone sealant including around the toilet flange and all pipes. Do not use latex caulk. It will dry hard and restrict movement. The silicone seal helps prevent water damage below the floor.

All expansion spaces in bathrooms and laundry rooms must be filled with silicone including doorways.

The expansion space around the perimeter must be sealed prior to installing the trim.

When installing in an adjoining room or hall, a t-molding must be used in the doorway between the rooms and the expansion space filled with silicone.

Do not install laminate in rooms with a floor drain or sump pump.

Newsweek recognizes MOHAWK for Environmental Performance

Newsweek has once again recognized Mohawk Industries for its leading position in environmental performance. For the third consecutive year, Mohawk placed in the magazine’s annual ranking of the 500 “greenest” U.S. companies. Mohawk is the only flooring company to make the 2011 list, which can be seen in the issue of Newsweek currently on newsstands.

“Mohawk is honored to be ranked among the leading manufacturers and service providers in Newsweek’s annual green rankings,” said Bill Kilbride, Chief Sustainability Officer. “This recognition is a testament to the commitment and hard work of all of our employees as we strive toward sustainability.”

According to Newsweek’s comprehensive research, Mohawk now ranks 292nd in overall sustainability, moving up from 350th on the 2010 Green Rankings list. Mohawk ranks ninth among all consumer goods manufacturers.

In July, Mohawk released its second annual sustainability report, documenting the company’s progress in implementing and achieving its aggressive environmental initiatives. This detailed reporting earned Mohawk high marks for Disclosure, which is a new calculation in the Newsweek Green Rankings scoring system that assesses companies’ reporting and transparency on environmental data. In Newsweek’s Disclosure category, Mohawk ranks 122nd.

“I’m particularly proud that we earned such a high ranking in disclosure since we have taken great pains in our reporting to provide our stakeholders with credible, verified information,” said Kilbride. “To be recognized for this by the Newsweek team is proof that doing the right thing is valued and appreciated.”

Newsweek’s Green Rankings list represents the first effort by a mainstream media organization to evaluate publicly traded companies on their environmental footprint, the methods through which they manage that footprint and their sustainability communications. To determine this year’s rankings, Newsweek partnered with leading environmental research organizations Trucost and Sustainalytics, which calculated the Environmental Impact Score and Environmental Management Score, respectively. Each accounted for 45 percent of the overall ranking, with the Disclosure Score representing the remaining 10 percent.
